As people get larger they begin to see this as the normal and do not see their weight as a problem 1.

Obesity is associated with multiple health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, impaired physical function, and depression 5.

Approximately 400,000 adult deaths in the United States each year are attributable to unhealthy dietary habits coupled with physical inactivity 6.

In 2004 the FDA estimated the overall direct and indirect cost of overweight and obesity was $117 billion per year 6.

In summary, obesity is having negative health effects on individuals including death, these health issues are affecting the overall cost of healthcare.  Since so many people are gaining weight it goes somewhat unrecognized and is considered the new normal.
